PowerShell 2.0 - Where can I find it?
I’ve been fielding a number of queries from colleagues and geek friends about the recently released PowerShell 2.0 and one of the recurring themes seems to be “I’ve searched for PowerShell 2.0, but I’m having trouble finding it…..”
As Jakul writes over on his blog this seems to be for a couple of reasons:
- A lot of people wrote a lot of blogposts about PowerShell 2.0 during its various CTP phases and searches for PowerShell 2.0 seems to bring up the download pages for these CTP releases as the most prominent results.
- PowerShell 2.0 was released as part of the Windows Management Framework which also includes WinRM and BITS 4.0. The average person looking for PowerShell 2.0 may well not be aware of this and even when they do it seems to lead to some confusion. The KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968929) which has the right information on where to download PowerShell 2.0 is titled ‘Windows Management Framework’ and no mention of PowerShell 2.0 in the title - possibly could have been better thought out to include this.
Given that the downlevel versions of PowerShell 2.0 for Windows 2008 / Vista and Windows 2003 / XP are what people will most likely be looking for right now, it would be good to try and improve this. Whether as Jakul suggests it is possible to fix the search results, who knows, but it is definitely worth a try.
So any other PowerShell bloggers out there start writing more about 2.0 and link to the right place ;-)
